Celebrating Tradition and Supporting Tomorrow's Leaders
The Power of 4-H at the Waukesha County Fair
This year marks the 183rd anniversary of the Waukesha County Fair, a proud tradition rooted in agriculture, family, and community spirit. Few events can boast such a lasting legacy— nearly two centuries of cultivating not only crops and livestock but also character, leadership, and a strong sense of civic pride. At the heart of this tradition stands 4-H, an enduring program that continues to shape the next generation of Wisconsin youth through hands-on learning, personal development, and service.
One of the many supporters of 4-H this year is Jim Engstrand of Redefined Realty, a proud vendor at the Waukesha County Fair and a lifelong Wisconsinite with deep roots in agriculture. Jim was honored to be a buyer of the Grand Champion Market Poultry, raised and shown by talented 4-H member Leona Pofahl.
Investing in Youth, Community, and Agriculture
For Jim, this was more than just a purchase, it was a way to give back to the community and celebrate the values he holds dear.
“Growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, I spent countless summers showing at Buffalo County 4-H club,” Jim said. “I even showed my Jersey cow at the Wisconsin State Fair and brought home a ribbon. Those experiences helped shape who I am today.”
Now a successful Realtor serving families across southeastern Wisconsin, he hasn’t forgotten the life lessons that came from early mornings in the barn, hours of preparation, and the sense of pride that came from a job well done.
“Hard work, responsibility, and community— those are the values I learned in 4-H, and I see them today in kids like Leona and her brother Aaron.”
Leona’s poultry project wasn’t just the Grand Champion winner, it was a testament to the time, effort, and care she dedicated to raising her birds. From selecting the right breed to feeding, cleaning, and preparing her animals for show, Leona exemplified the core of what makes 4-H such a powerful program. Her brother, Aaron Pofahl, also participated in the poultry category this year and proudly walked away a winner in his class. Aaron’s chicken was also purchased by Jim Engstrand, reinforcing his commitment to encouraging these young agriculturalists.
Why Supporting 4-H Matters
Supporting 4-H at events like the Waukesha County isn’t just about tradition, it’s an investment in the future. The program empowers young people to lead by doing, taking ownership of their goals, and engaging in their communities in meaningful ways. Whether it’s livestock, robotics, public speaking, or environmental science, 4-H gives youth the tools to succeed—both now and in life beyond the fairgrounds.
Buyers like Jim make it possible for 4-H participants to earn rewards for their hard work and to fund future projects, higher education, or careers in agriculture. It also sends a message: your hard work matters, your community sees you, we’re here to support you.
A Legacy of Faith and Family
Jim’s support of 4-H is just one expression of a life lived with purpose. Whether helping families find their dream homes or encouraging the next generation of farmers, Jim is guided by values rooted in faith, family, and the farming tradition.
“I was honored to support Leona and Aaron this year, and I look forward to many more years of being a part of this amazing fair. It’s not just about the ribbons, it’s about the people and the values we pass down from one generation to the next.”
